Borrowdale is a residential suburb in the north of Harare, which ranks among the most affluent and prestigious residential areas in the city and the country at large. It lies between the roads leading to Domboshava & Murehwa (Liberation Legacy Way(formerly Borrowdale Road) and Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Road (formerly Enterprise Road) respectively. It is bordered by Chisipite, Vainona, Pomona, The Grange, etc. Suburbs such as Glen Lorne, Greystone Park, Helensvale, Philadelphia, Ballantyne Park, Borrowdale Brooke are generally viewed as part of the Borrowdale neighborhood.
Borrowdale was originally set up by an early merchant Henry Borrow as an estate that combined residential and farming areas. The estate consisted of 22,275 hectares of land spreading out northwards. Borrow worked with his colleagues Heany and Johnson to produce vegetables and other products on the farm.
Borrow built a dam on the Borrowdale Brooke river in 1892. The dam was used for many years for irrigation but was subsequently destroyed in 1939 after serious flooding. The area was then developed into residential plots and this resulted in the emergence of the current Borrowdale as we know it.
Borrowdale is today considered the most affluent and prestigious Neighbourhood in Harare. Magnificent views, nature and unique architecture, lives up to the expectations of every buyer but water remains a challenge in most areas in this Neighborhood. Here and there you come across some properties not well taken care of but the regeneration is also gathering pace.
Commercial activities are now gathering pace along Liberation Legacy Way, with the creation of commercial hubs such as the Sam Levy Village, The Village Walk, Borrowdale Brooke Shopping Centre, etc. The Samy Levy Village is made up of various shops including, banks, hardwares, bars, clothing stores, sporting goods stores, gyms, gift shops, bakeries, restaurants and cafes, etc.
Schools in the area include St. John's College, St. John's Preparatory School, Greystone Park Primary School and The Heritage School, etc. The popular Borrowdale Race Course is also situated in the neighborhood.
There is a wide range of properties available for sale and for leasing in Borrowdale from Flats & Apartments, Residential & Commercial Land, Residential Houses & Clusters and Commercial Properties. Prices for houses in good condition ranges from US$350 000+ for double storey and US$250 000+ for single storey houses with 3 bedrooms and above on an average land size of 2500m2 and above.
Residential land prices averages USD40-45/m2 for stand sizes around 2 000m2 and $30-35/m2 for bigger land sizes over an acre.
Rentals for residential houses and apartments averages USD1 500 with some high end going for as much as USD2 500 per unit per month.
